Making reading fun can be a challenge. Children can be easily distracted and may not want to sit down and flip through pages of a book. And, if children associate reading with being at school, they may want to play video games or run around outside instead. But there are some ways to encourage children to read by making it fun.
Let’s go over a few of these ways.
Read Out Loud
When you read to your child out loud, you can change your tone of voice to make it more exciting. You can make dramatic pauses or enthusiastically read the ending. You may find your child being more drawn to the story and wanting to make it through to the end. If there are photos in the book, you can also pause to explain the photo or ask your child what their thoughts are on it.
Choose Pictures Or Finger Puppets
Picture books are extremely common for children. They illustrate what the story is saying to give children a better understanding. Try to choose picture books where there is still a good amount of regular text. This way, it is not just picture-based. If your children have outgrown or gotten bored of picture books, try purchasing a book with finger puppets. This allows you to act out the story by putting your hand in the finger sockets. You can also encourage your child to use the finger puppets to get them involved.
Read Different Types Of Writing Styles
You don’t also have to go the traditional route when you choose a story. There doesn’t have to be a storyline that ends with the princess and prince falling in love. You could choose poems, cartoons, comic books, or magazines. Whatever your child seems drawn to should be what you are reading.
